Thomas Hardy in Stinsford, Dorset

'HERE  LIES THE HEART OF
THOMAS HARDY OM
SON OF THOMAS AND JEMIMA HARDY
HE WAS BORN AT UPPER BOCKHAMPTON 2 JUNE 1840
AND DIED AT MAX GATE DORCHESTER 11 JANUARY 1928
HIS ASHES REST IN POETS CORNER WESTMINSTSER ABBEY'

Thomas Hardy's father and grandfather played viol and violin in the choir at Stinsford church for many years in the early part of the nineteenth century. Hardy himself knew this place well, and he shares this land with his parents, his wives Emma and Florence, and other members of the Hardy family. In his novel Under the Greenwood Tree (1872) he disguises the name of he village as 'Mellstock'.
